Ancient Philosophers get it Wrong

Until the 17th century, it was commonly believed that the heart was the source of human consciousness. A philosopher named Thomas Willis was among the first to recognize the immense powers that the brain possesses.

Finally, you can take advantage of this new-found knowledge, and use it to create success in your life. You will not need to suffer the dungeon or being burned as a heretic for thinking this way about the brain. That is what often happened back then, if you stated something contrary to common belief.

Brain Fact #5: Taken for granted: Breathing, Heart rate, and more

Don’t give it a second thought…

Brain Stem

Have you ever thought, “Why do I NOT need to think about breathing – it just happens?”

Basic life functions such as breathing, blood flow and heartbeat are controlled by the brain stem, located at the brain’s base; also known as the Pons (the Medulla) with the lower part being the Medulla Oblongata. The Medulla Oblongata continues on to the Spinal Cord. They have been in the evolution of amphibians, fish, reptiles and mammals, for over 500 million (500,000,000) years.

The autonomic functions regulated there keep your body alive and functioning, even when conditions may temporarily shut down the higher functions located in the larger portion of the brain. The location, between the rest of the brain and the rest of our body, is strategic to maintaining life in the body.

There are many references to you having the ability, or latent ability, to regulate these and other autonomic functions through disciplined and willful thought. As a Yogi can decrease heart rate and breathing, your mind can influence your body to respond both directly and indirectly to be healthful. Your own “Fountain of Youth”.

Brain Fact #4: Underweight People Risk Brain Shutdown

Are you Starving Your Brain?

Tired Flat Brain

Feeling Flat? Exhausted? Lethargic?
Feed Your Brain!

Did you know…

In the average human, the brain consumes about 17% of the body’s total energy but accounts for only 3% of bodyweight.

Dietitians suggest you should not go below 1400 calories per day, as this is the minimum amount necessary to meet your daily nutritional requirements. (I am keeping this simple, recognizing there is much more involved in maintaining good health.)

Therefore, 17% of 1400 would be 238 calories. That is around the same amount of calories if you were to run 2 miles or swim 900 meters every day.

But what would happen if you are in the process of removing the excess baggage from your body? Most of the time you are told to cut back on the amount of energy (food) you take in, and exercise to burn more energy.

If you remember, the brain controls all types of things happening around your body that are essential for sustaining good health; like your heart pumping blood, breathing, and making sure your bodily functions are doing what they should be doing, and not doing what they should not be doing, like cardiac arrhythmia.

It is important that you maintain proper nutrition going to your brain, even when you are burning more calories than you take in. Otherwise, you can suffer many different debilitating symptoms. You can lose memory, experience inability to make decisions, have decreased muscle coordination and longer response time, and plenty of any number of problems; because your brain controls too many functions to mention. An exacerbated inability to make decisions is a contributing factor why  anorexics have such a problem breaking free of anorexia. They have been starving their brain along with starving their body.

Maintaining your brain’s ability to work for you is paramount. Superior information gives you the edge in life. Both go hand in hand.

From the Heart, for your Heart!

Brain Facts #3: Humans require less Body Hair due to the Brain

Your Brain is Hot

Hot Head Hot Brain

Through human evolution, humans lost their body hair to compensate for the excess heat produced by the brain.

Researchers looking for the reason humans have much less body hair than other mammals have discovered the human brain produces a lot of heat. So the human body could dissipate that heat, fur was replaced by less hair, and perspiration increased to cool the body.

From now on, if someone asks you how you are different from any monkey or ape, you can tell them you have less hair, perspire more, and have a fuel burning brain.

Secondly, it also encouraged humans to stand upright and have the ability to run on 2 feet instead of 4.
